Safe Harbor Equine and Farm Animal  Sanctuary
Volunteer Orientation & Open House

Safe Harbor Equine & Livestock Sanctuary   PO Box 22    Cottontown, TN 37048        (615) 997-0697     Adopt one of our horses.  http://safeharborsanctuary.org/gallery

Join the Safe Harbor team for a prospective volunteer open house! Volunteer orientation is held every 2 to 3 months for individuals who want to learn how to become part of a growing team. We are a 100% volunteer organization, and every helping hand is valued. Come dressed for the weather, with closed toe, farm appropriate shoes. Orientation takes about 2 hours start to finish, and it is HANDS on.  Be on time please.

Yes, you will learn to muck a stall, groom a horse, and do other things that happen day to day in the barn, so please come dressed appropriately, and with an open mind and willingness to get a little dirty. Because we do also discuss policies, orientation is appropriate for ages 12 and up. *Parents, if you want to volunteer with your children you can bring them to volunteer once you are trained, so you can supervise them at the farm.
Safe Harbor Equine and Livestock Sanctuary was formed by a group of concerned animal advocates in Middle Tennessee to fill a gaping void in the world of large animal rescue.  While other equine specific rescues do exist, there is not one single rescue that provides retirement and respite care to animals in need, while also working on rehabilitation, training and adoption to those that are able to have a full life in a new home.  Safe Harbor’s mission extends beyond horses and includes all Equidae and Livestock animals that we have ability and capacity to aid. We are a no kill equine rescue. Animals in our organization are never subject to time limits or age limits. Visit http://safeharborsanctuary.org/

West TN Therapy Dogs READ at Central Library
~An official Tennessee Week for the Animals event~
Benjamin Hooks/Central Library     3030 Poplar Ave.          Memphis, TN  38111

Saturdays:  West TN Therapy Dogs come in and help to improve the reading skills of the young ones. How does the R.E.A.D.® Program work? It  utilizes registered therapy animals that have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament. When these special animals come to hear children read, its fun! This program has been exceptionally successful with West TN Therapy Dogs.

W hy dogs?Animals are ideal reading companions because they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, listen attentively, do not judge, laugh or criticize and allow children to proceed at their own pace and are less intimidating than peers.

University of Tennessee HALT -
Humans & Animals Learning Together
A program assisting at-risk adolescents and shelter dogs.

HALT   c/o Dr. Nancy Howell    College of Veterinary Medicine    The University of Tennessee    2407 River Drive                    Knoxville, TN 37996

PURPOSE: To provide a therapeutic intervention for at-risk adolescents through dog obedience training. OBJECTIVES: To offer adolescents an opportunity to develop a positive sense of accomplishment, self worth and pride.

-To offer adolescents an opportunity to improve specific living skills such as assertiveness, patience, staying on task, communication and commitment.

-To introduce adolescents to career opportunities in animal related fields.
-To provide a successful experience for the adolescents and dogs.
-To increase the adoptability of selected adult dogs through basic obedience training.

*Through a series of classes, a canine obedience instructor helps student trainers teach basic obedience commands to dogs from an animal shelter.

*Suitable dogs are selected from a local animal shelter and medically and behaviorally screened. They are given a standard series of inoculations, neutered or spayed, and boarded at the class site.

*Student trainers are adolescents from residential centers for treatment of substance abuse, behavioral or alienation problems. They are selected by the staff of their agency and are transported to the class site for the classes.

*The student trainer commits to one four-week course, meeting two times per week. Up to four agencies may furnish student trainers to work with one group of dogs. They train on different days. The dogs get quality attention each week.  Each dog is placed in a suitable home after graduation. Learn how to establish a prgram in your area on the website. Email  [email protected]

Each year, 19,000 greyhounds retire from U.S. tracks and are in need of homes. Why?
Retired racers are uniquely suited to live as companion animals. Affectionate and calm, they thrive on human attention and interaction, adjust quickly to home life and repay the kindness of their people with faithfulness and devotion.

A Prayer for the Animals
~An Official Tennessee Week for the Animals event~

Join all those of us who would like to observe a moment of prayer for the precious animals. We are requesting prayers from 5-6 pm Central time on Sunday. This is a multi-faith observance.

We can offer prayers, poems and memorials to our animal or all animals wherever we are and also light a candle by doing so if possible.

Wherever you are, if you can observe a moment for the animals who need us...that collective energy will surely grow and bring light to our cause to love, assist and help them from any and all suffering. For poems or additional inspiration, please visit
