Safe Harbor Equine and Livestock Sanctuary
Equine and Farm Animal Awareness Day

Tractor Supply
1011 Hillview Rd.   Franklin, TN    37064

Join us for a day of fun at Tractor Supply in Franklin, Tennessee! Meet rescue favorites like Fred Bird the Emu, Henry the Pot Bellied Pig, and more! We will have a adoptable donkeys and horses on site.

Concessions such as popcorn and cotton candy will be available for purchase along with Safe Harbor hats and shirts!  We will have adoption applications and foster applications on site, and this Community Day will be a great way to meet the team and learn more about rescue.

Safe Harbor Equine and Livestock Sanctuary was formed by a group of concerned animal advocates in Middle Tennessee to fill a gaping void in the world of large animal rescue.  While other equine specific rescues do exist, there is not one single rescue that provides retirement and respite care to animals in need, while also working on rehabilitation, training and adoption to those that are able to have a full life in a new home.  Safe Harbor’s mission extends beyond horses and includes all Equidae and Livestock animals that we have ability and capacity to aid.

We are focused on assisting equidae in their time of need. We work predominantly in Middle Tennessee.  We are a no kill equine rescue. Animals in our organization are never subject to time limits or age limits. Visit http://safeharborsanctuary.org/

Join Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue for our weekly adoption day at Petco. Shop, learn more about Proverbs, and say hello to some of our volunteers. Most importantly, meet many of our dogs and cats looking for their forever homes. If there is a particular pet you would like to meet, please notify us in advance so we can attempt to make the necessary arrangements. Due to the large number of animals in our care, we are unable to have all of them each Saturday. If interested in adopting please fill out an application (link to adoption application page) ahead of time for your best chance of taking your new friend home that day!

Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue's mission is to provide shelter and loving care for animals who have been abused, abandoned, owner surrendered or otherwise destined to be euthanized due to over-crowded shelter conditions.  At no time shall they be euthanized due to time constraints, medical need or other issues. Through the use of foster homes, Proverbs will provide loving care for our animals, to include veterinary care, food and any other necessity until responsible, loving homes can be found for all adoptable pets. All animals shall be spayed or neutered and we will make every effort to encourage those we encounter to do the same.                    _______________________________________________________

~An official Tennessee Week for the Animals event~

Benjamin Hooks/Central Library
3030 Poplar Ave.                  Memphis, TN  38111

Saturdays:  West TN Therapy Dogs come in and help to improve the reading skills of the young ones. How does the R.E.A.D.® Program work? It  utilizes registered therapy animals that have been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills and temperament. When these special animals come to hear children read, its fun! This program has been exceptionally successful with West TN Therapy Dogs.

W hy dogs?Animals are ideal reading companions because they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, listen attentively, do not judge, laugh or criticize and allow children to proceed at their own pace and are less intimidating than peers.

“Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All”

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace. The work of the United Nations would not be possible without the initial partnerships that were active in its creation and the thousands of partnerships each year between governments, civil society, the private sector, faith-based groups and other non-governmental organizations that are needed to support the Organization in achieving its future goals.  Visit http://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/

Note: To order fantastic resource book for TN Animals Laws, please  visit http://www.vet.utk.edu/cait/lawbook.php  “This book will hopefully empower people concerned about the welfare of animals,” said Dr. John New, Head of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the veterinary college. The book will also help identify gaps in the state law.  Teresa Jennings, Program Coordinator of CAIT, said, “We’re hoping this can be a resource that will make it easier for the general public to become better informed regarding their rights, privileges, and obligations to animals.” Profits from the sale of the book or CD will go to support humane education,spay/neuter efforts, and prevention of animal abuse.

Veterinarian Pet Memorial Program

Young-Williams Animal Center
3201 Division Street      Knoxville, TN 37919     865-215-6599

As a 501-(c)(3) organization, we rely on charitable donations to feed, house and care for more than 12,000 animals annually.   Funding from the Pet Memorial program helps stock shelter shelves with supplies, keep kennels clean, improve facilities, expand enrichment programs for pets, provide medical care, and ensure that more adoptable pets find forever homes.

Every client receives a card from Young-Williams Animal Center acknowledging your gift to us made in memory of their pet who has passed.  Caring for the abandoned animals in East Tennessee and trying to manage the pet overpopulation in the region are not easy tasks.  It is only through the generosity and support of business and individuals, like you that Young-Williams Animal Center is able to care for so many homeless animals and improve the state of animal welfare in our community. http://www.young-williams.org/blog/2015/08/03/veterinarian-memorial-program/

HALT - Humans & Animals Learning Together
A program assisting at-risk adolescents and shelter dogs.

HALT
c/o Dr. Nancy Howell
College of Veterinary Medicine    The University of Tennessee
2407 River Drive                    Knoxville, TN 37996

PURPOSE: To provide a therapeutic intervention for at-risk adolescents through dog obedience training.

OBJECTIVES: To offer adolescents an opportunity to develop a positive sense of accomplishment, self worth and pride.

-To offer adolescents an opportunity to improve specific living skills such as assertiveness, patience, staying on task, communication and commitment.

-To introduce adolescents to career opportunities in animal related fields.
-To provide a successful experience for the adolescents and dogs.
-To increase the adoptability of selected adult dogs through basic obedience training.

*Through a series of classes, a canine obedience instructor helps student trainers teach basic obedience commands to dogs from an animal shelter.

*Suitable dogs are selected from a local animal shelter and medically and behaviorally screened. They are given a standard series of inoculations, neutered or spayed, and boarded at the class site.

*Student trainers are adolescents from residential centers for treatment of substance abuse, behavioral or alienation problems. They are selected by the staff of their agency and are transported to the class site for the classes.

*The student trainer commits to one four-week course, meeting two times per week. Up to four agencies may furnish student trainers to work with one group of dogs. They train on different days. The dogs get quality attention each week.  Each dog is placed in a suitable home after graduation. Learn how to establish a prgram in your area on the website. Email nhowell@utk.edu

Greyhound Pets of America - Nashville (GPA/N) works collaboratively with adopters, with rescue, humane and other greyhound groups and the racing industry to find homes for retired racers. Each year, 20,000 greyhounds retire from U.S. tracks in need of homes. Our targeted adoption territory includes middle Tennessee, northern Alabama and southern and western Kentucky.

Based in Nashville, Tenn., GPA/N primarily gets adoptable greyhounds from tracks in West Memphis, Ark. and Birmingham, Ala. We also accept for placement retired racers whose owners can no longer keep them as well as retired racers who are turned into pounds, shelters and humane associations in our service area.http://gpanashville.org/

Almost Home Animal Rescue of Rutherford County
Murfreesboro, Tennessee 37129

The most important thing you can do to help is SPAY AND/OR NEUTER your pets. There is a huge overpopulation issue in the US, and it is especially felt here in the south.  Almost Home Animal Rescue, founded in 2004, has quickly grown into one of the area’s most respected rescue organizations.

We are a large breed Dog & Horse rescue. Located in Middle Tennessee, Almost Home utilizes a network of foster homes to nurture and prepare our rescues for their transition into permanent homes.  A dedicated group of approximately 30 volunteers and fosters has allowed us to achieve our current success, and we depend on the kindness of people like you to continue to expand our reach into the community.  http://www.almosthomerutherford.com/

GRFT strives to focus our efforts on helping retired racers for a simple reason: Greyhounds make wonderful pets. The dogs are easygoing, happy and affectionate. They're smart, learn quickly and adapt easily. Unlike the image many people have, greyhounds are not hyper. As a matter of fact, they're often referred to as 45-mile-an-hour couch potatoes and they don't need big backyards or lots of exercise. GRFT has placed many greyhounds in apartments and condos, with everyone from singles to seniors, to families with and without kids and to families with other/different kinds of pets.
