Safe Harbor Equine and Livestock Sanctuary was formed by a group of concerned animal advocates in Middle Tennessee to fill a gaping void in the world of large animal rescue.  While other equine specific rescues do exist, there is not one single rescue that provides retirement and respite care to animals in need, while also working on rehabilitation, training and adoption to those that are able to have a full life in a new home.  Safe Harbor’s mission extends beyond horses and includes all Equidae and Livestock animals that we have ability and capacity to aid. We are a no kill equine rescue. Animals in our organization are never subject to time limits or age limits. Visit

University of Tennessee HALT -
Humans & Animals Learning Together
A program assisting at-risk adolescents and shelter dogs.

HALT   c/o Dr. Nancy Howell    College of Veterinary Medicine    The University of Tennessee    2407 River Drive                    Knoxville, TN 37996

PURPOSE: To provide a therapeutic intervention for at-risk adolescents through dog obedience training. OBJECTIVES: To offer adolescents an opportunity to develop a positive sense of accomplishment, self worth and pride.

-To offer adolescents an opportunity to improve specific living skills such as assertiveness, patience, staying on task, communication and commitment.

-To introduce adolescents to career opportunities in animal related fields.
-To provide a successful experience for the adolescents and dogs.
-To increase the adoptability of selected adult dogs through basic obedience training.

*Through a series of classes, a canine obedience instructor helps student trainers teach basic obedience commands to dogs from an animal shelter.

*Suitable dogs are selected from a local animal shelter and medically and behaviorally screened. They are given a standard series of inoculations, neutered or spayed, and boarded at the class site.

*Student trainers are adolescents from residential centers for treatment of substance abuse, behavioral or alienation problems. They are selected by the staff of their agency and are transported to the class site for the classes.

*The student trainer commits to one four-week course, meeting two times per week. Up to four agencies may furnish student trainers to work with one group of dogs. They train on different days. The dogs get quality attention each week.  Each dog is placed in a suitable home after graduation. Learn how to establish a prgram in your area on the website. Email

"Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is “Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” which aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace. The work of the United Nations would not be possible without the initial partnerships that were active in its creation and the thousands of partnerships each year between governments, civil society, the private sector, faith-based groups and other non-governmental organizations that are needed to support the Organization in achieving its future goals.  Visit

Wednesday, September 21st, during the Noon hour, people of all nations will embrace this year’s theme “the Building Blocks for Peace” and shine the light on “The 17 Sustainable Development Goals.” This ambitious agenda calls on one-and-all to begin efforts to achieve and aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. This meaningful observance and goals are integral to achieving peace in our time, as development and peace are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. This single day is the beginning of major impact: even more, when we advocate and take action in our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the people and the planet to achieve “The Sustainable Development Goals” whether it is through simple recognition or active participation.

Through the use of foster homes, Proverbs will provide loving care for our animals, to include veterinary care, food and any other necessity until responsible, loving homes can be found for all adoptable pets. Adopt one of our beautiful loving Greys!

GRFT strives to focus our efforts on helping retired racers for a simple reason: Greyhounds make wonderful pets. The dogs are easygoing, happy and affectionate. They're smart, learn quickly and adapt easily. Unlike the image many people have, greyhounds are not hyper. As a matter of fact, they're often referred to as 45-mile-an-hour couch potatoes and they don't need big backyards or lots of exercise. GRFT has placed many greyhounds in apartments and condos, with everyone from singles to seniors, to families with and without kids and to families with other/different kinds of pets.

W hy dogs?Animals are ideal reading companions because they help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure, listen attentively, do not judge, laugh or criticize and allow children to proceed at their own pace and are less intimidating than peers.

UPCOMING Blessing of the Animals October 2nd

Blessing of the Animals   Grace St Luke's      Sunday Oct 2     4:00 pm
On Sunday, October 2, at 4:00 p.m. we invite you to bring your dogs, cats, hamsters, lizards, fish, birds, snakes and hedgehogs to Grace-St. Luke’s Church for the Blessing of the Animals as we commemorate St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals.

We will all gather in Trezevant for a service which will celebrate our pets and our love for them. During the service we celebrate the joy and love that animals bring into our lives and we pronounce the wonder of God’s creation. For everyone’s comfort, we ask that all creatures be leashed, caged or otherwise contained. Each animal will receive an individual blessing from the clergy and a certificate of that blessing. Following the service there will be a reception with refreshments for animals and their people.
